Your first major decision is your starting point. Both routes are incredible, but they offer very different experiences:
-
The Classic Manali Route: This route begins in Manali and enters Zanskar by crossing the mighty Shinku La (16,580 ft). It's wilder, less traveled, and feels more like a true expedition. However, it's highly recommended to be a 4x4 vehicle, and the road's opening is often dependent on weather, usually becoming reliably passable from late June. This route is best for those who want to maximize their off-road adventure.
-
The Leh Start (via Kargil): Starting in Leh, this route uses the Kargil to Padum road and crosses the Pensi La (14,440 ft). This road is considered the "gateway to Zanskar". While still demanding, it's generally wider, more traveled, and suitable for a 4x4 but sometimes passable for sturdy SUVs. It's the more accessible option for those who want to start their journey in Leh.
A 12-Day Leh–Zanskar 4x4 Expedition Itinerary
This itinerary assumes you're starting in Manali, which is the classic starting point for a full expedition. You can fly to Delhi and take a scenic bus to Manali (350km) to start the trip. If you're flying into Leh, you can join on Day 5, though we strongly recommend a full day for acclimatization.
Pro-Tip: This route is demanding. A 4x4 is a necessity, not a luxury.
